We can only really speculate the soft-bodied components of many of our prehistoric species. The inorganic parts remain, retaining its mineral composition or being infiltrated by other minerals over millions of years. This collage uses images of fossils online which have been repurposed to illustrate the contrasting nature of soft and hard. The soft is ephemeral making us fill in the gaps. But how reliable is our speculation if what remains is only the exoskeleton, skeleton or carapace?
